Todd Allison & the Petunia Violet

Todd Allison & the Petunia Violet is one of the most quirky and adorable comics I have ever read. Created by a university student called Nozmo, it is the story of Petunia Elkwood and the various mishaps that occur in her life as a result of her fascination with her neighbor, Todd Allison, an irritable but incredibly intelligent young man (who is secretly part of an investigative team looking for a serial arsonist known only as Violet).

What I love about this comic is that it combines the elements of a crime mystery with (possibly!) the elements of a romance between two odd people.

One thing that I'm not particularly fond of is Petunia's tendency to be meek and shy, however her character works well for the story and she is certainly not one dimensional. This adds to her charm and the numerous comedic moments sprinkled throughout the story.

Some interesting things are revealed about Petunia throughout the story, things that may have a more sinister twist. As for Todd, there are some secrets in his past as well it seems, though the comic has yet to get into that. The investigation has yet to progress very far, but this is due to the misadventures of Todd and Petunia more than anything else. It will definitely be very interesting when that arc of the story will pick up. Violet has been shown, and several people have alluded to her, but who is she, really? Why is she burning down all these buildings? And what's up with all the mysterious notes?

On the art side of things, the style matches the quirkiness of the story, making this comic a particularly pleasing composition. I especially like the chapter covers. Such as:

And also this:

So yeah... I really like the chapter covers.

Todd Allison & the Petunia Violet is a delightful webcomic. It blends together comedy and awkwardness with a sinister mystery. It certainly gets many points for its originality and creativity. And another plus? It updates throughout the month with each update consisting of several pages, which means that a nice chunk of the story is available with every update. You should definitely check it out!
